I went over [with my father] when I was seventeen to do a sweat lodge… My task was to find the rocks to put into the pit. But I was told that I couldn’t just go and collect rocks, I had to ask whether they wanted to come… I was quite naive and I was on my own so I could’ve not done it, but I just sat and went, “um, d’ya wanna…? D’ya wanna come? It’s nice and warm in there. No? Okay. Nothing, you’re giving me nothing!”

During his first trip to Starling City, he remembers Laurel at Oliver’s party. The whole time he couldn’t take his eyes off of her and when he was assigned to work with a DA in Starling City, Barry jumps to the chance in hopes of seeing Laurel, and possibly talking to her. Little did he know, he was going to see a lot more of Laurel than he imagined.
After a couple of weeks of just seeing her and being completely intimidated and impressed by her wits and fierceness, Barry finally gets the courage to talk to her. Making a fool of himself, he stumbles over his words, nearly forgetting his own name but Laurel finds it adorable. They soon strike up a friendship and Barry’s feelings for Laurel grows even stronger.
Along the way, both Laurel and Barry discover that Oliver is the Arrow, both accepting his alter ego. It also made Laurel more fond of Oliver. With Laurel’s knowledge of Oliver’s secret identity, Oliver feels he can finally have a proper relationship with Laurel without the lies.
After Oliver confesses his feelings for Laurel, Laurel admits that they should just be friends and that she only cares for him as a friend. Realizing that her feelings now belong to Barry and that the feelings she had for Oliver are long gone, she hugs Oliver and thanks him for everything he’s done. Barry sees this interaction too late, thinking that she chose Oliver and quietly accepts it.
A few days pass with Barry keeping his distance from Laurel, he soon returns to Central City. Calling Laurel and apologizing for being distant, he lets her know that he’d always be there for her and congratulates her and Oliver. Before Laurel could respond though, Barry’s struck by a red bolt of lightning, the line cutting dead. It wasn’t until hours later, Laurel gets another call from Central City General, informing her that since she was Barry’s primary contact, Barry was placed in a coma.
